School Zone Speed Camera Program
The Milledgeville Police Department utilizes automated speed enforcement cameras in designated school zones to help protect children, pedestrians, and motorists. The system operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; however, school zone speed limits are only enforced during the posted school zone hours. Outside of those posted hours, enforcement reverts to the normal posted speed limit for that roadway.
This program is authorized under Georgia law, O.C.G.A. § 40-14-18.
Speed cameras are posted with advance warning signs. During the posted school zone hours, citations are issued against the reduced school zone speed limit — typically during school arrival and dismissal times. Outside of those hours, the system continues to operate and issues citations based on the normal posted speed limit for that roadway.
How It Works
- Cameras photograph vehicles traveling above the posted school zone speed limit
- Images are reviewed by a sworn law enforcement officer before any citation is issued
- Citations are mailed to the registered vehicle owner
- A warning is issued for the first violation during the initial program period
- Subsequent violations result in a $75 citation (first offense) or $125 (subsequent)
