About Communications & Dispatch

The MPD Communications & Dispatch unit serves as the operational nerve center for the Milledgeville Police Department. Dispatchers coordinate every officer response, monitor radio traffic across all active units, and ensure that information reaches the field accurately and without delay. Their work is continuous — 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

While 911 emergency calls in the Milledgeville area are routed through the county's emergency communications center, MPD dispatchers play a distinct and essential role: they manage all MPD-specific radio communications, handle non-emergency calls directed to the department, and serve as the real-time link between command staff and officers in the field. Every call for service, every officer check-in, every coordinated response runs through this unit.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Receiving and prioritizing non-emergency calls for police service
  • Managing all MPD radio communications across patrol, investigations, and specialty units
  • Dispatching officers to calls for service and coordinating multi-unit responses
  • Maintaining real-time awareness of officer locations and assignment status
  • Running inquiries through state and national law enforcement databases
  • Supporting officer safety monitoring throughout each shift
  • Coordinating with county emergency communications as needed during major incidents
  • Maintaining accurate call logs and dispatch records

Training & Certification

All MPD dispatchers complete comprehensive training through the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and maintain active certification to access state and national criminal justice information systems. This certification is not a formality — it reflects a rigorous standard of knowledge and responsibility, covering criminal history access, NCIC queries, warrant verification, and the handling of sensitive law enforcement data.

Beyond GCIC certification, dispatchers receive ongoing training in emergency call handling, radio operations, and the specific protocols that govern MPD's response procedures. The skill set required to manage multiple simultaneous channels, remain calm under pressure, and deliver accurate information in real time represents a professional discipline that is critical to officer safety and effective policing.

Non-Emergency Line

To reach MPD Communications for non-emergency matters, call (478) 414-4090. This line is monitored at all times. For all emergencies, dial 911.
