About the K-9 Unit

The Milledgeville Police Department K-9 Unit consists of specially trained police service dogs and their certified handlers. K-9 teams serve as a force multiplier for patrol operations, providing capabilities that significantly enhance officer safety and investigative effectiveness.

MPD K-9 handlers are uniformed patrol officers who carry dual responsibilities — performing all standard patrol functions while also deploying their K-9 partner when specialized capabilities are needed.

K-9 Capabilities

  • Narcotics detection — identification of controlled substances during traffic stops, searches, and warrant executions
  • Tracking and apprehension of fleeing suspects
  • Building and area searches following crimes in progress
  • Evidence searches in large or complex environments
  • Officer safety and crowd deterrence
  • Community outreach and public education demonstrations

Training & Certification

All MPD K-9 teams are certified through an accredited law enforcement K-9 training program. Handlers and dogs undergo regular maintenance training to maintain proficiency and certification standards. K-9 teams are subject to continuous evaluation and must meet Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requirements.

K-9 Deployment

K-9 teams are deployed through patrol supervisors. Requests for K-9 assistance during active incidents should be made through dispatch by calling 911. For non-emergency inquiries, call (478) 414-4090.
