About Crime Scene Investigation
The Milledgeville Police Department Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) unit is responsible for the systematic documentation, collection, and preservation of physical evidence at crime scenes. CSI personnel operate under the Criminal Investigations Division and provide critical scientific support to detectives and prosecutors throughout the investigative process.
MPD crime scene investigators are trained evidence technicians who apply established forensic protocols to ensure that evidence is properly collected, documented, and maintained — preserving the integrity of the chain of custody from scene to courtroom.
Core Functions
- Crime scene documentation — photography, video, and detailed sketching
- Physical evidence collection, packaging, and chain-of-custody documentation
- Latent fingerprint development and recovery
- Biological evidence collection including DNA swabs and blood pattern analysis
- Trace and impression evidence recovery (tire tracks, shoe impressions, tool marks)
- Firearm and ballistic evidence processing
- Digital media preservation at the scene level
- Evidence submission to GBI crime laboratory for analysis
Evidence Management
All physical evidence collected by MPD is maintained in a secure evidence facility in accordance with state law and departmental policy. Evidence is tracked from collection through final disposition using a chain-of-custody system that ensures admissibility in court proceedings.
For information about retrieving property held as evidence or for safekeeping, see the Evidence & SafeKeeping Retrieval section on the CID page — all pickups are by appointment only.
Submitting Crime Scene Requests
CSI response is coordinated through patrol supervisors and CID detectives. Crime scene units are not directly requested by the public. To report a crime that may require forensic processing, call (478) 414-4090 or 911 in an emergency.
