About Bicycle Patrol

The Milledgeville Police Department Bicycle Patrol Unit deploys certified patrol officers on police bicycles to enhance community visibility and accessibility in areas where motor vehicles are less effective. Bicycle officers serve as an approachable presence that fosters positive community interaction while maintaining full law enforcement authority.

Bike patrol officers are certified through the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) or equivalent training program, covering tactical riding, officer safety, and bike-specific response techniques.

Areas of Operation

  • Downtown Milledgeville business district and pedestrian corridors
  • City parks, greenways, and recreational areas
  • Neighborhoods and residential areas during community events
  • Special events, festivals, and large public gatherings
  • Georgia College & State University area during high-activity periods

Community Role

Bicycle officers are uniquely positioned to engage with the public in an informal, accessible setting. By patrolling at street level without the physical barrier of a patrol vehicle, bike officers build relationships with business owners, residents, and visitors — a core component of MPD's community-oriented policing strategy.
